God tells us to seek first the kingdom of heaven. It is Satan's goal to lead us away from Jesus and into the pursuit of the world. Unfortunately, it is easy to fall into the trap of trying to follow God and the world at the same time. This type of life will leave you feeling empty and depressed. One might ask, “How does one attempt to follow the world and God?” Perhaps you go to church, pay tithe, and have personal devotions. Perhaps you also regularly rent the latest movie releases that contain violence, sex, and/or drugs. I would say this would be a good example of trying to follow God and the world at the same time. James 4:7, 8 says, “Come near to God, and God will come near to you. You sinners, clean sin out of your lives. You who are trying to follow God and the world at the same time, make your thinking pure.” It is impossible for us to resist Satan's temptations alone. In contrast, with God's help, Satan will tremble and run for his life. What an awesome thing it is that by simply asking, God will give us the strength needed to cause Satan to flee. In fact, Proverbs 18:10 says, “The Lord is like a strong tower; those who do right can run to him for safety.”
